A beautiful handcarved lovespoon designed and made by Marianne Cain at her workshop in Newport. South Wales. Interlinked hearts signifying unbreakable love. Made from quality welsh limewood sourced from the local Wentwood forest or surrounding area. Approx 9" tall.
The custom of giving carved lovespoons as love tokens began in Wales in the 17th Century although ornamental carvings in many forms can be dated to much further back. Today, these are given as gifts to people all across the World. The Welsh tradition sees a lovespoon being carved with various symbols which signify the meaning of the gift.
The spoon could be as simple or as complex as the skills of the carver allowed and the symbols include the following:
Heart = Love
Bells = Wedding or Anniversary
Lock = Security
Cross = Faith
Twisted Stem = Growing Love
Anchor = Steadfastness
Thanks
Marianne
